How many times have you tried to read a website on your phone ?I guess yes. The GlobalMobile Research: The Smartphone User & the Mobile Marketer study which wasconducted between March and July thisyear had over 30,000 respondents from 30 countries has shed some light on how mobile web optimization is not an option anymore. It is now part of the user's preference. As I took my time toreview it last night, the recent study show that more than 70% of smartphoneowners are accessing news sites with their mobile phones and trend is growing.Italso shows that large online advertisers, or four out of five worldwide brand sites, are currently not optimized for the mobile web experience which frustrates manyweb users who want to access their sites.

The regions that boasts the largest populations of first time smartphoneusers are my homecountry of Australia,Malaysia,India, Japan, South Korea andTaiwan. When it came to online advertising, the report highlighted how 89% ofpeople do notice ads sometimes, with search engine and in-app ads boasting thehigh recall rates at 39% and 46% respectively. The data shows that what is alsonotable for businesses is 66% of those who did notice ads took action. Also 36%visit the brand's site while 6% called the business via clicking on the numberlisted via their phone. The numbers will grow as more affordable smartphonemodels start hitting the market and the demand from users for services andinformation served via their smartphones increased.

In my observation,I can predict that the current dominance of computer usageversus phones could realistically be flipped in two to three years. Those thatmissed the boat in this coming tsunami will only be swept overboard and youwill find that those who do survive, are the ones who have prioritized the mobileplatform. As a result, when you hire a web developer ensure remember to addressthe needs of mobile web readers. It has become critical for websites to beoptimized for the mobile web as it is incredibly important for website ownersto think about making mobile central to their strategy.
