Google senior vice-presidentof mobile Andy Rubin announced via a post on his Google+ account that"[t]here are now over 700,000 Android devices activated every day."Headded, "for those wondering, we count each device only once (for example,we don't count re-sold devices), and activations means you go into a store, buya device, put it on the network by subscribing to a wireless service."

The figure equates to 4.9 millionAndroid activations per week or 255.5 million activations per year. In otherwords, if Google could sustain its current rate of 700,000 activations a dayand the global population remained constant at 2010's 6.84 billion, it wouldtake just under 27 years until everyone on the planet owned an Android device.

Android's speedy growth is ahuge ego boost for Google - in November the company revealed that it hadactivated more than 200 million devices at a rate of 550,000 activations perday.Apple announced that it had sold 250 million iOS devices during the iPhone4S announcement in October but did not reveal its daily activation rate.
