Roamz is an app that aggregates data from social networks around aparticular location to provide information about what is happening at venues inthe area. Launched at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco last week, the apphas already received 8,000 downloads. But there are still kinks to be workedout.Roamz to me was just launched as anygood startup should probably a bitearlier than they could have done. I feel as a developer that they could havespent another six or eight months building it as it has pertinent issues thatneed to be addressed.

The free app is available for iPhone on the iTunes store. One thing that has come to my mind is that this app was developed to caterfor the explosion of social content on social networks such as Twitter.Instead of checking the local newspaper orsocial networks, a new app takes the guesswork out of finding local events andwhat is happening nearby. Say I'm driving down the road inHelsinki and there's a car event going on in Espoo. How do I find out aboutthat? Unless I'm following someone on Twitter or Foursquare I'm going to missit.
The app gathers public data from Twitter, Facebook, Foursquare and Instagramabout a particular location into a feed tailored to a user's interests, chosenfrom 10 categories, ranging from child or pet friendly activities, torestaurants, attractions, shopping and nightlife.Roamz vision is to sift through those millions ofposts and pieces of content and work out the signals that are actually relevantto the user at the time they're relevant.Using artificial intelligence the appgets smarter as it learns how a user rates particular venues and the types ofcontent uploaded or frequently viewed.

Roamz uses this information to refinethe data being presented. The company plans to increase the amount of contentavailable, which is currently sparse in some areas. While densely populatedareas such as Helsinki have content from hours or even minutes ago, othercities like Oulu tend to have less recent content and this is where Roamzaddresses the shortage.Roamz has alreadyhave more data than we know what to do with. It's about them mining the datathat the've got which will eventually make it better.
After downloading it,I realized that the content is being filtered outconservatively to ensure that data in the app is relevant and they are alsoplanning to improve the intelligence of the app.If Roamz notice that you're going to a beef burgereveryday at 1230pm as I like doing, and you open up Roamz at 12pm, Roamzshould be smart enough to start showing you activity being discussed atMacDonalds nearby.Roamz is said to have advanced plans to enable users topurchase and redeem tickets for an event discovered on Roamz within theapp.
Although there are many location-based apps for finding venues nearby, ithinks there is room for Roamz.Just like many other users, people are gettingtired of opening different apps. And even when you do, you're only seeing whatyour friends are doing and not what everyoneelse is doing and that is why I feel this Australia company has somethingrefreshing to offer to the market.
